Is this your first CMA Music Fest? What do you think so far?
It is and I’m having a blast! I was out here yesterday, today, and then tomorrow. I have been playing at Tavern 96.
Tell me about your new song on Silverado’s Signature Songwriters Series?
I have this song called “Girl” that I wrote by myself. It’s pretty much a ‘you’re the girl that I’ve been waiting for’ type of deal. Hooked up with this girl, it ended up being something that I really enjoyed, and I kind of just stuck it out. I wrote it about 2 1/2 years ago in Nashville. I write a lot in town, but I wrote that one by myself at my house. I have a studio/writing room set up.
How long have you been honing your craft as a singer/songwriter?
I’ve been singing my whole life, as far as I can remember. I started playing guitar when I was about 6, and then I picked up other instruments like the banjo since then. I work on it all of the time. I also record and do demo work and stuff as well, so I have to stay up on my playing, singing, and writing. I literally write every day.
Are you mainly inspired by what happens around you for your songs?
Sometimes I create an idea just straight from nothing, but there’s always some kind of inspiration behind it. I do use my life experiences or someone else’s if something is going on in their life. I always make it real, it’s not ever generic. There’s always some meaning behind it, whether or not it just happened to me, or something I have experienced before. I have had the chance to write with some great people. Actually one of my most favorite people to write with is my best friend Stephen Kirk. Him and his brother have a pop duo called Tryon and they had a Top 40 last year. He and I have been best friends since I got to town; we just work really well together. But I have got to write with some other cool people too like Gary Baker and Walt Aldridge, some of the classic guys who have had fantastic cuts.
If we turned on your iPod/music device, what would be playing?
Probably an Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, or a Keith Urban song. Both their old and new, I love it all. I’m not very particular about country music. I love it all, I respect it all, there’s something I love about all of it.
South Carolina is famous for their “Low Country Boils” What goes into yours and makes for a great low-country boil?
Must have shrimp or crawdads and potatoes, but crawdads or shrimp is probably the main thing.
