In both design and decor, Del Frisco’s Grille evokes an atmosphere of rustic, masculine comfort with reclaimed woods, comfortable chairs, and Southern upscale charm. The restaurant serves chef-inspired American classics and hand-crafted cocktails. Whether you’re digging into dishes in the main dining room or dining al fresco on the gorgeous urban courtyard overlooking Maryland Way Park, Del Frisco’s Grille is devoted to the excellence and promise of fresh ingredients.
Service is another area in which this new place definitely excels. On both of our visits, servers were knowledgeable about the food and skilled at providing informed attention without cloying familiarity or bothersome hovering. The team members are obviously well-trained hospitality professionals, the kind of individuals to take note of and ask for specifically on return visits like server and musician Canaan Cox.
Del Frisco’s Grille wine list includes affordable and approachable wines. The cocktail menu is exceptional. In fact, I have found myself pairing cocktails with my meal more than wine because of their vibrant, experimental nature. Anything the bar makes with vodka is both dangerously fun and refined. The VIP is a fruity concoction of Hawaiian Pineapple infused with Clementine vodka. The Tennessee Peach, a powerful combination of peaches, honey, fresh lime, and Jack Daniel’s Whiskey, was like a remedy to the bitter cold outside.
The starters are particularly good. Perfectly cooked, the chef’s skills are in evidence in the exquisite presentation of the food. Be sure to start your dinner with the Wild Mushroom Flatbread. It arrived at the table piping hot and impossibly fragrant. It’s possible to make a meal out of several small plates. But the most remarkable item on this section of the menu is the Fire Roasted Artichoke.
I’d recommend starting the meal with something light, such as the heirloom tomato and burrata salad. Salads are well-executed and a terrific. (I keep telling myself it’s good for me.)
Entrees didn’t disappoint either. For our entrée, we decided to share the prime beef short rib stroganoff featured on the menu. This was an enormously satisfying dish. The super-slow cooking method transformed the sometimes tough cut of beef into an almost silky mouthful. The pappardelle noodles were hearty and cooked perfect. The sour cream and tobacco onions provided a nice lightness to this otherwise heavy dish. At $28.50, this dish was a fine-dining bargain.
One of the best main courses was parmesan lemon sole sporting a beautiful golden-brown crust. Served with buttery crab, sun-dried tomatoes, and arugula salad on chive lemon butter sauce, it’s well-priced at $29.50. In fact, the pricing at Del Frisco’s is refreshingly affordable.
The desserts are all intricate wonders of baking techniques and deconstructed presentations. Tasty and technically impressive, it was a great way to round out the meal.
The service and dining rituals at Del Frisco’s Grille were pleasantly ceremonious. Each dish arrived with its own utensils, and empty dishes were swept away like magic. A refined and romantic atmosphere, excellent service, and sophisticated, serious cooking with a creative bent, and a sly sense of fun make it clear why it’s such a favorite with its loyal customers.
