The Nashville Parthenon
2500 West End Ave
Nashville, TN 37203
The Nashville Parthenon is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece that symbolizes Nashville’s place in America as the Athens of the South. The Greek Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC to memorialize the Hellenic victory over Persian Empire invaders during the Greco-Persian Wars. The Nashville Parthenon was built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition to promote Nashville as an American cultural and artistic Mecca.
Today, the Nashville Parthenon serves as an art museum featuring not only classical works but also those of modern artists such as Andy Warhol. In 1990, sculptor Alan LeQuire unveiled his Athena Parthenos, a 42-foot statue of the Greek goddess Athena that was added beside the Parthenon.
